Agia Galini is a beautiful small fishing village in South Crete.

Almost 800 people live the village and it can accommodate up to 2.500 visitors. In Agia Galini you can find a lot of restaurants with delicious Cretan cuisine, traditional cafes where you can taste tsikoudia and mezedes, bars for your night out as well as gift shops, jewelry shops etc

The village has got a big bay-like beach, which is protected from the winds. From the port of Agia Galini you can go to nearby beaches with small boats (Moni Preveli- Agios Pavlos- Agios Georgios).

The modern village of Agia Galini is built at the place of the ancient Minoan city Soulia. There was a temple here dedicated to the goddess Artemis. Remnants of the city and the temple such as buildings, graves, marbles -as well as two granite columns that grace the village church till today- have been found at the foundations of the new houses in Agia Galini.

According to the tradition this was the point from which Daedalus and Icarus flew away in order to escape King Minos. There is a monument for those pioneers aviators on a rock at the port.

Agia Galini is named after a Byzantine princess, who was going to the Holy Land and her ship was caught in the midst of a storm. She prayed to the Virgin Mary and asked for help. She promised that she would build a temple to the port that they would find.

The ship found the secure beach of the village, that is protected from the winds and the princess started to build the temple and she gave it the name PANAGIA GALINI which became AGIA GALINI after all those years. Nowadays this temple is the cemetery of the village. Families from Melampes and other nearby villages started to build the village as we know it today in 1884. The port helped them to develop important financial and trade activity as well as touristic activity the last 30 years.

800 people live in Agia Galini and they make their living fishing, growing their crops as well as working in tourism and trade.
